The Road Goddess Guide

Mind

Rider Alert

photo: Sara McCallister

Motorcycling is our choice to ease tension and escape daily routines allowing us to feel the freedom in the wind and the exhilaration of the ride. But let’s not lose our sense of alertness in our quest for road therapy. Many factors can put a damper on our mental and physical capabilities influencing one’s situational awareness, judgment, reaction time and common sense. Here are some roadworthy tips to help keep your mind in tune for a safe journey.

~Gear: Proper fitting gear appropriate for the current weather conditions will keep your mind focused on the ride at hand and your body comfortable from the elements.

~Meals: If your heading out early, always eat a healthy breakfast and avoid heavy meals throughout your ride that will make you feel bloated, stuffed and fatigued. And if you choose to eat a hearty meal consider a 20-minute break to allow for digestion.

~Drinks: Dehydration can have the same effects as being intoxicated, so always make sure you are taking in plenty of liquids. Opt for water or natural juice in place of highly processed sugar drinks that can exacerbate your thirst. Also, studies show that one high-energy drink is the equivalent to fourteen cups of coffee, with a fast high can’t you imagine a fast low?

~Breaks: What could be better than stopping to enjoy the view and relaxing the mind, this is road therapy isn’t it? A five-minute break to stretch your legs, get your circulation flowing and put your mind back into perspective will do wonders to keep you alert.

Body

So when selecting riding gear, each of us may require a unique fit and style that reflects our own individual personality. But you’ll be hard-pressed to find both unique and well-fitted apparel on many racks found at local motorcycle shops. Ace High Leathers understands this dilemma and is dedicated to ensuring that you get a proper custom fit that is made to enhance your riding experience - not hinder it. On the AHL site, you will find a “Getting Started” section that guides you through helpful steps to attain that ultimate fit and style you seek for a leather jacket, vest, or a pair of chaps. Here is a sneak peak at…

How To Fit Chaps:

Make sure that they fit from the belt down to the top of the leg. There should not be a "bulge" on the front of the chap when you are standing straight.

The upper part of the chap should lay nicely against the hip and tummy area. In other words, the chaps will appear to be too long just in the hip area if you are short in the waist thus the "bulge". We do a lot of alterations for girls in this area.

A chap should never cut you and make you feel uncomfortable. We do several kinds of alterations to help you get the correct fit.

The belt should buckle in the middle not at either end.   If this happens the chaps will appear to fit but the buckle will be off to one side causing the upper part to not fit properly.

The back of the chaps should not need an extender unless you are big in the waist and very small in the legs.

Chaps should not be real tight on the thigh because it can cause you to loose circulation while you are riding.

The chaps should generally ride on the hips unless you really prefer the waist. If so, then again make sure they are not too long or too short from the waist through the area that generally has the pocket on it.

Length should be long enough so that, when you are sitting down, the chaps do not come up over the top of the boot -but not so long that you are walking on the bottom edge of the chap.

In general: Sit, squat, swing your leg up and over your bike in the chaps! You will feel the fact that, "yes" you have chaps on and "no" it's not the same as a loose fitting pair of sweat pants... BUT they should still feel comfortable and naturally, look great! For more information on custom riding leathers, motorcycle accessories and getting the proper fit go to www.acehighleathers.com

Feed your inner spirit:

Some may call it silly superstition, while others heartily believe in the mysterious unknown. It has piqued our curiosity to see the number of us out there who rely on some sort of… hmm… let’s say holistic precaution. This personal belief - whether it may be ridiculous or not - means a lot to some motorcyclists, who may base these ideas on old legends, biker traditions or just real road experiences. From our precious little trinkets and talisman claiming to ward off evil spirits, to that threadbare bandanna that’s been with you through thick-n-thin, these items and customs offer the inspirational backup we crave. So in quest to learn more, please take our poll; and don‘t forget to leave a comment, your words of wisdom may shed light to a new “observance.”
